Vitamin Supplementation

Today's modern family finds it a challenge to eat right. Five to nine servings of vegetables a day may be recommended, but who can find the time to include them in the diet? Fast foods certainly do not offer the proper mix of fruits, vegetables and fiber. Vitamin tablets seem to offer protection, yet many people don't fully absorb these tablets; they are difficult for the body to digest and often pass straight through the digestive tract.

When fruits and vegetables are the core of a meal plan they can play an important role in the prevention of chronic disease, especially cancer. Combining fruit and vegetable intake with physical activity, a healthy weight and abstinence of smoking may reduce the risk of cancer 60-70 percent. (American Institue for Cancer Research, 1997)

Modern farming methods have rendered most of North America's soils sadly depleted of the many trace minerals we need to stay healthy and disease free. A United States Senate report, #264, states, "Our physical well-being is more directly dependent upon the minerals we take into our systems than upon calories or vitamins, or upon the precise proportions of starch, protein or carbohydrates we consume. ... The alarming fact is that the foods - fruits, vegetables and grains, now being raised... no longer contain enough of certain needed minerals ... 99% of the American people are deficient in minerals, and a marked deficiency in any one of the more important minerals actually results in disease." This document was written over 60 years ago, in the 1930's. Conditions have not improved since that time. Even if we pay close attention to the number of servings we eat, it
is still close to impossible to get all the necessary nutrients we need. In 1998, the US government very quietly issued a statement to the press that all Americans need to supplement, or run the risk of later illness.
